ckets/amp/Ĭlaremont may have seen the early ‘90s support staff (ie Fabian, Peggy, etc) wearing them and thought it was cool (though I can’t find a reference for that)- he was an aviation fanatic after all- but the Harras run was DEFINITELY ripping off the X-Men. They were ripping off the way that Rogue, Cyke, etc started dressing years earlier in the Jim Lee era. It was straight-up “wait- the kids love the X-teams, right? Let’s make our team more like THEM!” and just swiping a visual trait and not any of the storytelling or anything.Īctually, there's were shown BEFORE the X-Men's as Black Widow was seen wearing one three months before X-Men #1 was published.Claremont even admitted in an interview at the time that "He took the Bomber jackets from his Avengers Support Staff run" because it was a nice Uniform option that didn't take away from the costumes. The big issue with the jackets was it was openly copying what the X-Men were doing at the exact same time, right down to the “single letter logo” being on them. One of the Avengers cartoons from the late nineties just slapped a matching A-in-Circle logo on all of their shoulders, that worked alright. The Legion of Superheroes all adopted the tri-part uniform with matching “Big L Belts” look around this same time, for much the same reason, and I think they did it better. I actually kind of liked the jackets, it was a nice way of giving them a team uniform without completely erasing their individual costumes.
